What Makes You Happy: Another Way to Decorate

Hello, and welcome back to the Mural Sources blog! In our last blog post, we talked about how to incorporate feng shui into your designs and why feng shui can be beneficial. Today, we are going to talk about another method of implementing decor items based on Marie Kondo's book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and other unconventional decor methods

For many, Kondo's book was revolutionary. Gone were the days of trying to figure out the best way to organize your space through something purely methodical. Yes, there was a method to Kondo's style, but there was something more. Kondo's organizational and decorating advice, like feng shui, takes into consideration the health of the spirit. In her book, when she instructs the reader to clean out their space, getting rid of the clutter, as a metric for knowing what to keep and what to pitch, she asks them "what makes you happy?"

We've all been there when we are doing our yearly spring cleaning and reach that point where you no longer know what to keep and what to throw out, and so either we just toss everything out or put all those unknown items in a dark corner of our space "to work on later." Often, when decorating or helping our clients choose the right elements to include in their decor, it is easy to reach a similar point in which we or they don't know what they want. As someone who offers modern wall murals that are timeless and sometimes eclectic in style, we wonder what the effects would be if we included decor items that made us or, if we are helping our clients, our clients happy.

With all this in mind, we offer a bit of different advice on how to decorate your space.

Unconventional Ways to Decorate

Does It Make You Happy?

Have you ever been to your local thrift store and scanned the shelves to suddenly have something catch your eye? Perhaps this has happened to you and that "thing" has been something cheap and not on trend, such as a plastic gnome, or maybe it was something random like an E.T. character cookie jar. Maybe you wrote it off because where would you put it? Or, maybe, it sits comfortable on a shelf in your home. Regardless, the next time you are debating to buy a decor item, consider whether or not it gives your heart joy.

How Does It Affect Your Feng Shui?

If you read our last blog post, you will have learned about the basics of feng shui. Feng shui is all about energy and how to allow energy to flow through your home well to promote health, happiness, and prosperity. Key tenets of feng shui include the basics such as decluttering your space and finding a means for quality air and light. However, ultimately feng shui can become very personal by taking your own birth sign into consideration and the goals you have for yourself and your family.

Does It Make Your House a Home?

It's easy to get caught up in the latest trends, which don't get us wrong — we love being in the know about trends — but what about thinking more on what makes your house a home? Taking this into consideration can make your space feel personal and give it a unique touch that is more interesting than if you would have blindly followed the current trends.

We at Mural Sources feel that there are many ways to create an artfully, modern, and timeless design. For this reason, we offer modern wall murals that can give your space a unique twist.
